If I have to, I will pay it out of my own pocket.” Trump’s comment raised eyebrows, as he suggested covering the $1,430 owed to each astronaut, calling the amount “not a lot” for what they endured.

The root cause of the delay was Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, which encountered helium leaks and thruster failures, making it unsafe for return. Instead of coming back in June 2023, as planned, the astronauts remained in space until March 2025. Eventually, a SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule was deployed to bring them home.
