Nawazuddin Siddiqui Calls Out Industry Bias – Acclaimed actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui has once again voiced his concerns about the deeply rooted biases in the Indian film industry. In a recent interview, he reflected on how talent alone is often not enough to secure major roles or hefty production budgets, especially for actors who don’t fit the stereotypical mold of a conventional “hero.”

Are Great Actors Overlooked When It Comes to Big-Budget Films?

Nawazuddin questioned the industry’s selective appreciation, pointing out that legendary performers like Irrfan Khan, Manoj Bajpayee, Naseeruddin Shah, and Om Puri were rarely, if ever, trusted with high-budget films. “You call them great actors now, but who ever made a ₹20-30 crore film with them?” he asked pointedly. Despite being widely celebrated for their performances, these actors were typically cast in supporting roles or in smaller-budget films.
Does Bollywood Still Prioritize Appearance Over Ability – Nawazuddin Siddiqui Calls Out Industry Bias?

The actor emphasized how the Indian industry tends to classify performers into rigid hierarchies—hero, star, superstar—based more on appearance and mass appeal than raw talent. “We have incredible talent among us, but you’ll often see them playing minor roles. They’re not supporting actors; they’re just not seen as commercial leads,” he said.
In stark contrast, Nawazuddin cited international cinema as a space where actors are chosen for their craft, not their looks. “Abroad, a good actor is simply a good actor,” he stated, adding that there’s far less pressure to fit a particular physical stereotype.
Will This Pattern Ever Change?

Siddiqui expressed doubt that this bias will change any time soon. “This pattern has existed for decades. Maybe it will remain even after we’re gone,” he remarked with a mix of disappointment and resignation.
A Look at Nawazuddin’s Upcoming Role

Despite the systemic issues he raised, Nawazuddin continues to challenge norms through his own work. He will soon be seen in ‘Costao’, a biographical film about Costao Fernandes—a principled customs officer in 1990s Goa who took on gold smugglers and systemic corruption. Set to premiere on ZEE5 on May 1, the film also stars Priya Bapat, Kishore Kumar G, Gagan Dev Riar, and Hussain Dalal, and is directed by newcomer Sejal Shah.
With projects like Costao, Nawazuddin hopes to bring more meaningful stories and authentic characters to the forefront—regardless of how they look.
