Kapil Sharma’s much-anticipated OTT debut, The Great Indian Kapil Show, premiered with high hopes on Netflix on March 30. The show’s hype was electric, drawing huge personalities like Ranbir Kapoor, Neetu Kapoor, Sunny Deol, and Aamir Khan as guests. But despite the star-studded lineup and the comedy legend at the helm, the show failed to impress the audience, resulting in its abrupt cancellation. Fans and industry experts were taken aback by the unexpected ending after only one month. However, not everyone is saddened by the show’s leave. Comedian Sunil Pal has a different take: he says he’s glad it’s over.
Sunil Pal, who has openly criticized Kapil Sharma’s move to OTT, caused a stir when he shared his thoughts on the show’s unexpected finale. In a candid video posted on his Instagram, Pal didn’t mince words, implying that Kapil’s show belonged on traditional television, not on platforms known for edgier content. According to Pal, The Great Indian Kapil Show simply didn’t fit in with Netflix’s penchant for more “vulgar” and “erotic” themes.
Sunil Pal, who had earlier criticized the show’s move to Netflix, expressed his concerns about OTT platforms’ reliance on vulgar content, double meanings, and nudity. Addressing Kapil Sharma in his video, he said, “Bahut dukh ho raha hai. I am feeling sad that The Great Indian Kapil Show is ending. I want to tell Kapil, acha hai apka show band ho raha hai. You are not an OTT artist. Aap TV ke, ghar ghar ke artist ho. You are loved by all. I was very worried when it was announced that Kapil is doing an OTT show because they have vulgar, double meaning content. They show nudity.”
The comedian went on to argue that Netflix caters to a different demographic, focusing on more erotic and controversial content. “Wahan ka hero wohi hota hai jo erotic hota hai. Netflix doesn’t want talented people, they need content which has abuses,” he added. Despite these harsh statements Sunil Pal expressed his respect and admiration for Kapil Sharma, inviting him back to TV, where he believes he truly belongs.
“I am happy your show is ending on Netflix,” Sunil Pal continued. “That platform doesn’t deserve you. You are a big artist.” His advice to Kapil Sharma was clear: get rid of the “nalle” writers who don’t contribute meaningful content, and instead hire talent that complements Kapil’s comedic style.
Sunil Pal also urged Kapil’s co-stars, including Kiku Sharda and Krushna Abhishek, to refrain from appearing on multiple shows, suggesting that it might dilute their appeal. “I also appeal to other stars like Kiku Sharda and Krushna Abhishek to not appear much in other shows. It doesn’t look good if you are seen everywhere. Please dhyan dijiye,” he added.
Though The Great Indian Kapil Show seemed to promise a fresh kind of comedy on OTT, its abrupt end after only 13 episodes suggests that the show’s creators might have misjudged the audience’s expectations. Given Kapil Sharma’s considerable fan base and the show’s initial hype, this outcome has left many wondering if the OTT experiment was worth it.
Sunil Pal’s candid remarks express a sentiment that many people share: Kapil Sharma’s brand of comedy might be better suited for traditional television, where his charm and humor have made him a household figure. As discussions about a possible second season continue, fans are hoping that Kapil Sharma finds his way back to the small screen, where he truly excels.
